Is AI Content Bad for SEO? What Gets Pages Demoted

Copix · · 6 min read

AI content is not bad for SEO because a model wrote it. Google says it rewards helpful content however it’s produced and treats pages made mainly to rank as spam. AI pages get into trouble when they’re thin and unchecked, or mass-produced.

So the useful question is what makes an AI-written page fail, and how to check yours before it goes live.

What does Google say about AI-generated content?

Google’s Search guidance on AI-generated content, published in early 2023, says the method of production doesn’t decide rankings. What counts is whether the page is helpful and reliable for people. The same guidance says that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies.

In 2024 Google added a spam policy for scaled content abuse: many pages produced mainly to rank, with little value for readers, whether a person or a machine made them. That’s the line. A single careful article drafted with Claude is fine. Five hundred near-identical city pages generated overnight are the pattern the policy describes.

Hiding that you used AI is beside the point. What matters is whether the page deserves the click.

Why do some AI-written pages fail to rank?

AI drafts tend to fail for reasons you can see on the page. None of them is the model’s fingerprint. They’re the same problems a rushed human writer has, made more often because a draft costs nothing.

Problem What it looks like What to do
No direct answer Three paragraphs of context before the point Answer the query in the first two sentences
Nothing new The same points as the top ten results, reworded Add your own example, data you have, or a clear opinion
Invented facts A statistic with no source, a study nobody can find Cite a real source or cut the claim
Wrong query A post that answers a question nobody searches for Pick the query before you write
Template voice Stock openers and words readers have learned to skip Run an AI-tell check and rewrite those lines
Scale without care Dozens of pages that differ by one word Publish fewer pages, each one checked

The invented facts row is the dangerous one. A model will produce a confident percentage when it has none, and a reader who checks it stops trusting the whole site.

How do you check an AI draft before publishing?

Treat the AI draft as a first draft from a fast writer who has never met your customers. Then run these five steps.

  1. Confirm the query. Write down the search the page should answer. If two of your posts answer the same one, merge them. Our guide on how to choose target keywords covers this step.
  2. Check the opening. The first two sentences should answer that search in plain words. If someone read only those, would they have what they came for?
  3. Check every fact. Every claim with a number or a name in it either has a source you’ve opened or gets removed. Mark gaps as [SOURCE NEEDED] while you edit so they can’t slip through.
  4. Add what only you have. An example from your work, a screenshot of your own process, a mistake you made. This is the part a competitor’s model can’t copy.
  5. Read it for tells. Throat-clearing intros, fake contrasts and stock signature words make readers skim. Our list of AI tells and their fixes covers what to cut.

Then check the structure: a title with the query near the front, question subheads, a table where you compare things, and an FAQ. We go through that in blog post structure for SEO.

Does AI detection affect rankings?

Google hasn’t said it runs AI detectors as a ranking signal, and its guidance points the other way: it judges the content, not the tool. Third-party AI detectors also produce false positives on human writing, so a high “AI” score from one of them tells you little about how a page will rank.

What a detector does pick up is the same thing readers pick up: uniform sentences, stock phrases, lists of three by habit. Fixing those helps because it makes the page better to read, not because it fools a machine.

What happens after you publish?

A checked page still has to earn links and clicks over time, and that part doesn’t change with AI. Watch which queries the page shows up for in Search Console. If it ranks for a different question than the one you targeted, that’s a signal to adjust the title or the opening.

AI answers add a second audience. Pages that open with a clear answer, keep facts sourced and use tables are easier for an assistant to quote. Our guide to generative engine optimization covers what makes a page worth citing.

Do you need a tool to check AI content for SEO?

No. The five steps above work with a checklist and an hour. A tool helps when you publish often and want the same checks every time.

Copix Complete includes an SEO tool your assistant can call before you publish. Its check_draft action runs house rules on the Markdown draft against its query: the title and description lengths, the direct answer, the table and FAQ, question subheads, internal links. It adds an honesty check that flags overpromising and hype, plus an on-page audit. The copy tools on both plans include humanize, which marks AI tells with their exact positions. Your assistant still writes the fixes. See what the SEO engine checks, compare plans on the pricing section, or start from the home page.

FAQ

Will Google penalize my site for using ChatGPT or Claude?

Google’s guidance says it doesn’t penalize content for being AI-written. It acts on spam, including pages mass-produced mainly to rank. A useful page you drafted with an assistant and checked is treated like any other page.

Should I disclose that a post was written with AI?

Google suggests explaining how content was made when readers would reasonably want to know, for example in an author line or a note on method. For most marketing posts, a clear author and accurate facts matter more than a label.

Is AI-written content less likely to be cited by AI answers?

Nothing public suggests assistants prefer human-written pages. They quote pages that answer the question clearly and can be trusted. Sourced facts and a direct opening help either way.

How much should I edit an AI draft?

Edit until every fact is checked, the opening answers the query, and the page contains at least one thing only you could add. For some drafts that’s a light pass. For others it means rewriting half of it.

Can I publish many AI pages at once?

You can, but scaled pages with little value are what Google’s spam policy describes. Publish at the pace you can check each page properly.

Make your AI write like a copywriter.
